What to do

Tap the squares to build a shape. Each square is 1 cm by 1 cm. Watch the area and the perimeter as you add or take away squares.

Predict, then test

Three tests. For each one, choose what you think will happen. Then run the simulation and see if you were right.

Each square is 1 cm by 1 cm.

Area: 6 cm²

Perimeter: 10 cm

Area: count the squares inside the shape.

Perimeter: count the sides of squares on the outside edge (the orange line).

Quick shapes

KSSR terms

area: The size of a surface, measured in square units such as cm². Count the 1 cm squares.
perimeter: The total length around the outside of a shape.
square centimetre (cm²): The area of a square with sides of 1 cm.
area of a rectangle: length × width
composite shape: Shapes joined together. A side they share is inside, so it is not counted in the perimeter.
