Lever

What to do

Drag the fulcrum, the load and the force along the bar, and change their sizes. Find where the bar balances.

Three tests. For each one, choose what you think will happen. Then run the simulation and see if you were right.

First-class lever: the fulcrum is in the middle, as in a seesaw or a claw hammer.

Force × distance is smaller, so the load stays down.

lever: A bar that turns on a fulcrum. The closer the load is to the fulcrum, the less force is needed.
load: The weight of the object being moved.
fulcrum: The fixed point that supports the bar and lets it turn.
force: The push or pull that you give.
first-, second- and third-class lever: Named by what is in the middle: the fulcrum (first), the load (second) or the force (third). These names go beyond Standard 4: you meet them again in secondary school.
