Shadow and the Sun

What to do

Drag the Sun across the sky, or move the time slider. Watch how the shadow of the pole changes.

Three tests. For each one, choose what you think will happen. Then run the simulation and see if you were right.

9:00 a.m.

The Sun is low in the East.

Shadow of the 100 cm pole: 100 cm long, pointing West.

Shadows are long in the morning and evening and shortest at noon. A shadow is always on the side away from the Sun.

Time

shadow: Forms when an object blocks light.
opaque object: Lets no light pass through, so it forms a clear, dark shadow.
apparent movement of the Sun: The Sun seems to rise in the East and set in the West because Earth rotates from West to East.
length and direction of a shadow: Long and pointing West in the morning, shortest at noon, long and pointing East in the evening.
